What is maths anxiety?

Maths anxiety refers to the feeling of stress, nervousness, and fear when approaching mathematics. This anxiety can negatively impact a child’s motivation, test-taking abilities, and performance in math.

Why is it important to help kids facing anxiety in maths?

Mathematics is an essential skill for success in many careers. Therefore, it is critical to address maths anxiety in kids to ensure they develop a positive attitude towards maths in their early years. Maths anxiety can have long term consequences and can lead to limiting career choices and opportunities for kids.

Is maths anxiety common in kids?

According to a study by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), more than 50% of Class 5 students in India had maths anxiety. A survey conducted in 2019 by the Global Teacher Status Index ranked India last out of 35 countries in maths proficiency. A 2018 study by the Educational Research Association (ERA) found that 63% of students in the United States reported feeling anxious about mathematics.

All of the research and surveys done on anxiety in maths among kids show a high prevalence of maths anxiety among kids across the world.

What are the reasons for kids being anxious about Maths?

Pressure to perform:  Students may feel a lot of pressure to perform well in math, especially if they have parents or teachers who place high expectations on them.

Fear of failure: Children may be afraid of making mistakes or being unable to solve math problems correctly. This fear may stem from factors like past failures, negative feedback, or a belief that they are simply “bad at math.”

Lack of confidence: Some children may lack the confidence or self-esteem necessary to tackle math problems. They may perceive math as a difficult or intimidating subject, which can lead to a negative cycle of poor performance and even lower self-confidence.

Poor teaching: Sometimes, math anxiety can stem from poor instruction or a lack of guidance and support from teachers. If students don’t receive adequate instruction or feel unsupported in their learning, they may struggle to keep up and develop negative attitudes towards math.

Learning differences: Some students have learning differences, such as dyscalculia, which can make it much harder for them to learn and retain math concepts. This struggle can lead to feelings of frustration, anxiety, and hopelessness.
